3B. Taking a Break

url.jpg
What do I to relax and forget about everything for a short period of time is going for walks. Going for walks has always been something that I recently found that helps me relax, and makes me feel at ease. When I get stress or very angry about a situation I just leave my house and go on very long walks through out my town. The town that I live in is a very urban place and there’s lot of place to walk through. While I take my walks I normal walk at a steady pace and listen to my music, which calms me down dramatically. For me it can be easy at times to just get up and go and know that soon after I will feel much better about my self. When going for walks I tend too stay out for a long period of time just so I can have more freedom, instead of staying cooped up the house.

During my walks it’s a time for to reflect on my self and what I can do better about things that I had a hard time facing. It gives my brain a time to think about life. Doing this helps me because if I get angry or I am very stressed out, instead of getting mad at other and doing things I might regret, I just go out and walk where it’s a calm, soothing environment. This motivates me to well, and knowing that I love doing this and want to better myself. Before I found an interest in walking, I would never know how calming it really is and that I would love doing it.

Applying this to my college career is not very hard. Reason is, I know through out college there is going to be times where I’m going to get extremely stressed out and in order for me to overcome it, I know what works for me to be less stress is going for walks. With me going for walks it helps mentally, it makes me become mentally strong. For instance what mad me mad one day won’t make me mad the next day. It helps me relax and apply myself to be not to be mentally weak but to be strong through out my college education and in life as well.

3A. Mindset and Motivation

Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have the greatness thrust upon them” (William Shakespeare)

William Shakespeare once said, “there is nothing good or bad, but thinking makes it so.”

What does this mean? After reading this quote over and over again I came to release that motivation does not have a good or bad outcome, however it depends on the person thinking. Such as, when you are thinking about if you should study for the test or not you can have the motivation to study or you can have no motivation and wait last minute and study. The good outcome of this is that you’ll have a better chance passing the test and the bad outcome is that you will have a disadvantage on passing the test.

How does the quote relate to motivation and the different kinds of motivations like intrinsic motivation vs. extrinsic motivation, and growth mindset vs. fixed mindset? Well first we need to know what intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation is motivation based on taking pleasure and in an activity rather working toward an external reward. In my own words this means that people with intrinsic motivation only care on the outcome of things, say if a student passed a test with a “c” then that student will work harder to improve and reach a higher grade. Extrinsic motivation comes from outside, such as performing for money or reward. Meaning that they really don’t care about whatever happens like if a student passed a test with a “c” then that student would be perfectly fine with it. The reason why intrinsic vs. extrinsic relates to the quote is because a person’s motivation depends on that individual mindset. As for growth mindset vs. fixed mindset it tries in the same for intrinsic motivation vs. extrinsic motivation because a person who has a growth mindset also has an intrinsic motivation is because they both relate to each other as for a person who wants to improve and as for a person who has a fixed mindset they share a relation with extrinsic motivation because those are the people who settle on things.

After all, intrinsic motivation vs. extrinsic motivation and growth mindset vs. fixed mindset correlate with the quote.

Initiative- the ability to assess and initiate things independently

This week vocab work is initiative and I believe that this word id highly important in college. Reason why it’s so important is because when it comes to any work that you need to do it’s all on you to complete it. Also it’s important because in college you are independent, you don’t have an authority figure to sit you down and make sure that you do all your work. That doesn’t happen in college it’s all on you. Taking the initiative makes you responsible and by being responsible it brings you success and those things will make your life much more easier specially for a college student.

2I.

During my time at college I notice that there were lots of different activities that they have for the students to join and watch, like the dance team, step dance and etc. During yesterday’s prep rally I got to witness the many talents that the students at SCSU has. There were amazing talents being showcase. But the act that stood out to me he most has to be the step team. I have never witness a true step team in person and when I say they were amazing I’m not lying they were amazing. It’s hard to believe that they were so well balanced. They never missed a step and you could see the passion that they had in their eyes. I know they were proud of what they did. Over the course of this semester I look forward into seeing what Southern has to offer their students
Here's footage of the step team in action
(first team is SCSU)

2B. Being Shy

Even though it’s my second week of college, I notice that I find myself to be very shy and find it to be very awkward to talk to new people. It’s something that doesn’t come to me naturally like other people. I know it’s something that I have to work on. But I personally find it sort of difficult because I just don’t like to start thing from the beginning. Reason I say this is because phrase one if you want to call it, you always feel awkward and uncomfortable with that person and I just don’t like that feeling.

But since I’m in college I know that it’s very important to make connections with people and to make friends that would support you on anything and in order to gain some you have to be very outgoing and able to spark up a conversation with people and it’s something that I have to work on. One thing that I know that I have to change is that I have to let me guard down, be more open about things and how people may approach me with things. I know that’s most likely the biggest thing that I struggle with. Another thing that I’m going to work on is going to events that the school is hosting like football games, dances, or other things that would bring people together. Even though I am commuter I will try and make sure that I would get involved because not only will it make me more open to people it will also look good on a job application, and that’s always a great when it can benefit on a possible career.

Even though it’s my first semester of college I hope that I will come more comfortable with others and be able to feel comfortable with others.

2B. Deep Thinking

In my second week of college my INQ professor assigned articles to read, and as a typical student I dreaded it. But even though I dreaded the fact that I had articles too read I knew that it had to be done for class. While reading the articles, I could see why my professor assigned them for homework because it evolved insight on how to become a successful college student. One of the articles that I benefited the most was the article “How to Become a Deep Thinker at College”. Reason why I found it to be highly usefully is because the article basically helps you manage your time and how to use that time very wisely, and that was very much appreciated.

After reading this article I know that there were changes that I needed to make very quickly. Some of the main things that this article brought up were time management and the amount of time you should really be focus on your school work. For instance, say you had a class for a hour the amount of homework you get should be doubled or even tripled so that you forget and it will stick to you. When reading the article I found myself making a comment next to section saying “the more activities you are involved in the less you’ll be focus on your school work” and reason why I wrote this comment is because it’s really accurate and make sense for everyone to understand.  If I were too recommend this article to incoming freshmen or just college students I would highly recommend it.

“This advice is so simplistic as to border on facetious. But it’s the truth. The students who make great mental leaps, and really become more sophisticated thinkers, are those who have more than enough time to think about, work on, grapple with, and revel in their coursework.”

INQUIRY

When you search the word Inquiry that is what you find.
This week's word is Inquiry and the reason why it’s the first word to know is because every year all freshmen are required to take and INQ class. This is class is to help guide all freshmen into the right path so that they can be successful I college and in life.
Reason why they call it an INQ class is because INQ is the root word for Inquiry, and Inquiry means to ask questions. Asking question for all new freshmens in college is very important because it’s a new beginning and there are lots of things running through their minds. Also Inquiry is a way to get to know new people  because for some meeting new people is very scary and by having this class your able to meet new people are seeing what they have in common with you.
Also by having Inquiry class it teaches you old words that plays a huge part as being a college student, for instance Responsibility we all know what it means but we really don’t comprehend it. Another word that we all know but don’t think about is Persuasion. This will happen almost everyday during your time at college but its up to you to control your action and what you do.

Responsibility- Something for which one is responsible; a duty, obligation, or burden.
Persuasion-  the state or fact of being persuaded or convinced. (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/)
