9b. Feeling confident in College

People say that college is a time that is mostly about having loads of homework to complete and having lots of papers to complete and YES they are right.

So far in my college journey I have witness personally the theory’s that people say with the piles of work that I have to complete.

But I somehow I have been getting thing done on time and most important I’ve been doing things right.

This semester I have five courses and the courses that I am taking are:

INQ

ENG

MAT

SOC

CSC

Pretty much I’m taking the standard class a freshman will be taking.

So far for pass weeks I had a chance and saw what classes are my strongest that I feel confident and some that are my weakest.

The classes that I feel most confident are INQ, ENG, SOC, and CSC. These four class come the easiest to me like my CSC class it’s a computer class and we’re learning all about excel and access, but the reason why its easy to me is because I took the course in High school so to me its and easy passing grade that I can receive. As for my INQ and SOC, these classes are fairly new to me and I have adjusted to them quite nicely. As for my ENg class I thought that, that was going to be a challenge due to the fact that im horribly at English but surprisingly I’m doing great and it shocked me that I was doing great.
However the class that I don’t feel too confident about is my math class because I always suffer through math even though High School math was never my strong point. But I know that for the next couple of weeks I’m going to have to work my brains off to feel confident about my work in t

9v. Critical Thinking

Critical Thinking

What is Critical Thinking? When I search the term Critical Thinking I find that the def. they provided me with is, a way of deciding whether a claim is true, partially true, or false. Critical thinking is a process that leads to skills that can be learned, mastered and used. Critical thinking is a tool by which one can come about reasoned conclusions based on a reasoned process. This process incorporates passion and creativity, but guides it with discipline, practicality and common sense.

Two words that correlate with Critical Thinking are

Analyze- to break up a whole into its parts, to examine in detail so as to determine the nature of, to look more deeply into an issue or situation.

Clarity- to make easier to understand, to free from confusion ambiguity, to remove obscurities.

9i. Career Service

This week I set up an interview with the career service counselor name Blake and even though it was for my project for my INQ class I found it extreme helpful and recommend others to pay them a visit they really know what they are talking about and they make you feel sure of yourself if that makes sense.

What I forgot to post in my video is that Career Service is located at SCSU in the Wintergreen building on Wintergreen Ave. and if you’re an early plan I highly recommend you on paying them a visit because the more you are prepared the more easier it will be in the future.

9v. Critical Thinking

What is Critical Thinking?

Well to me Critical Thinking is when a person is thinking of a problem in depth, meaning that there looking for answers on how something works or how it came about.

I find that it’s important to know who to deal with critical thinking in college because sometimes in college you have to be very well rounded with an answer that you provide. You may have to think about what is it that you are being asking in the question that is being presented to you, so it comes time to answer the question you wouldn’t be stuck or make any mistakes. This is why it’s important to know about critical thinking.

Also its important in life. In life we don’t know what going to happen, we cant for tell the future and thinks about how this is going to impact our lives in the near future. So that’s why its important to really think about something and go in depth with it. That’s what critical thinking is going in depth with a problem or maybe just a theory.

This is how people really use critical thinking is when they have theory that they want to fully understand.

As for me and how I have been applying critical thinking to my studies is that I don’t just think about the positive side of an answer that I’m answering. I think about both sides of the problem positive and negative because I want both points to be proven so that it can be a very well in depth responses.
This is how I think and apply critical thinking to my studies and in life in general because I want to know how something can either make me or break me.

Overall Critical thinking is other word meaning going in depth in my opinion.

8I. Major Expo

This week i attended the Major Expo Fair that SCSU was holding in the Student Center. Even though i have already declared a major, it was still good me for to attend anyways because i found more info about my major. I was also thinking about minoring in something and Southern had a great amount of things that i found very interesting that i may be considering to minor in. Even things that i never knew i had interest i and that was very surprising even for me.
Overall i was glad that i attended the fair and looking forward to spring semester class registrations.

8V. MASTERY

MASTERY
What is Mastery?
When I searched the word mastery on Google the definition they gave me was knowledge and skill that allows you to do, use, or understand something very well.
I find that when you’re in college you should be able to master the class that you have and when graduation comes you’ll be ready for employment. You master the requirements to be what you want to be.
Two words I found similar to the word Mastery are
Experiences- skill or knowledge that you get by doing something
Command-to deserve or be able to get or receive (something)

8B. Sonia Sotomayor

“Inhale the Bad Exhale the Good”
My Six word Memoir
Me personally I was never a huge fan of memoirs, and its still feel the same way after reading Sonia Sotomayor’s memoir. However Southern did a great job picking out her memoir to be a common read for all freshmen’s because they are aspects that many can relate for instance, she was the first in her family to go off to college, she was a diabetic, and she’s from a minority family. Everybody can at least relate to one of those things.
What can first-year college students learn from her book about applying for college is that college is the door of opportunities. You will never know what you are passionate about until you go off to college. Reason is because say a person is very interested in becoming a nurse, so they go off to college and major in nursing. But once they start taking classes in nursing they come to realize that they aren’t really passionate about it so they find some else that surprising they love and intend to major in it. That’s why college is the door of opportunities because you never know what you are really passionate about.
Here’s the cover of the book:

Overall her books talks about the adversity she had to face in order to become the woman that she is today and now becoming a role model to many people in the world especially for the minority culture because if she can do it you can do it to.
Here is a video of Sonia Sotomayor discussing her book and sharing her struggles, success and talking to actress Eva Longoria.

After reading this book it taught me very valuable lessons when it comes to me facing with college, and how I can transfer myself after college.

8A. Mastery of Blogging

During the course of my INQ class my professor has all her students writing blogs every week. Each week we have a topic that we must write about and make sure that we are answering all the question or requirements that she posts on her own blog. For this week, she wants us to find the two blogs that demonstrate mastery to blogging.
I personally feel that blog mastery to blogging is a blog named A Country Girl’s Perspective. Reason why I find this blog to master blogging is because she always seems to understand what the questions or requirements that our professor wants and looking for in a blog. I feel that all her blogs are A+. Not only does she answer the questions properly she also relates it to her own personal life and makes it more personal just like a blog should be. This is the reason why I find A Country Girl’s Perspective a great blog and a blog that masters the art of blogging.
Another blog that I feel that maters the art of blogging is a blog named The Rest is Still Unwritten.  Just with the title it makes it very mysterious in a way, and grabs the audience or readers attention right away. Also her blogging style is very awesome its very elegant that must the reader want to see more also in her writing as well. What makes the blog great is that she makes very personal which people love because it shows the reader the emotion and feelings this writer has for her blogs.

These two blogs demonstrate A or A+ work of mastering of blogging.
Here are the two links of the blogs so you can check them out and see how great bloggers they are

7I. School Dance

For this weeks involvement I attended the Homecoming dance that SCSU was holding in the student center. And I could honestly say that it was probably one of the best SCHOOL functions I attended. The music was great which made everybody have a blast. Since I didn’t go to the first dance Southern did I felt sort of disappointed but I did make sure that I attend this dance. I hope in the near future Southern does another dance because it was very well done dance.

7V. Failure

Failure
When I searched the term failure I found the definition I found was, the condition or fact of not achieving the desired end or ends.
I believe that failure leads to success and the desire to achieve and do better things. Without failure your life would most likely mean anything. You wouldn’t have anything worth fighting for.
Two words that can relate are Achieving and Desire.
Achievement - a thing done successfully, typically by effort, courage, or skill.
Desire - a strong feeling of wanting to have something or wishing for something to happen.

Failure leads to having Success.

Failure is Another word for Motivation

Some aspects of college that I feel that I am failing probably has to be my math class. I don’t know why I feel like I’m failing. I never was the one that got math it took time for me to comprehend it. It was something that I have always struggled the most with all the way from 6th grade to now in college. Even though I have been so far successful in passing and completing math, I feel that now since I am in college it’s more on me to teach myself math which is a difficult task because a person like me who dislikes math and struggles cant self teach a subject that they don’t have “passion”. However I know that I have to over come this feeling of doubt and how to be more active in class by asking more questions and going to the professor’s office hours.
Here are some points that I found online about overcoming failure
1.     Learn from your mistakes and failures.
2.     Don’t dwell on it.
3.     Don’t be afraid to try again.
4.     Think about worse case scenarios
5.     Take baby steps
6.     Tell yourself “I can do this!” (and believe it.)
7.     Surround yourself with positive people.
8.     Talk to others (or read)
9.     Realize that failure is part of the learning curve.
1.     Mobilize your fear.
With these steps you rare sure to over your fear of failing and being successful.
