Since starting college as a
commuter student at SCSU I always park in lot 9 and every day I noticed a piece
of art that is always.
I don’t even know what the name of it
is but for some reason it always catches my eyes because it’s something that I never
seen before. The structure of it is made of metal and rocks and it is very
unique. My mission for the upcoming weeks in my spare time I will try and find
out what’s the name it and where it originated from.
For the past
week my INQ teacher told us to keep a time schedule to show what each student
does each hour and my there were some outrageous numbers of hours students were
doing. But in class our professor told us to break the time schedule into
sections and the biggest sections that she wanted recorded was the number the
hours you do your homework/ time your doing outside work and the number of
hours you socialize throughout the week. As I started to calculate the total of
hours I did each activity, the amount of homework/ time doing my work outside
of class was 23 hours. According to her statics in class I fell into the C range
of a typical college student because the students who do at least 40 hours a
week earn an A, students who do 30 hours a week fall into the B range, students
who fall into the 20 hours earn a C, students who do 10 hours are in the D
range and for 0 hours are in the F range.
Doing this
experiment taught me a lot about my self and things that I need to work on the
most. Some of the things that I need to work on are that I tend to
procrastinate quite often and that leads me to either do homework late or
finish early because I don’t want to do it or just quit. With doing this week schedule it was sort of
a wake up call for me and I’m glad that I did it.
When it came
for me to calculate the total of number of socializing I did over the week it
came out to be about 18 hours and I felt that that was a great amount due to
the fact that I still manage to get things done and still have time for my
friends. Which is always good so that
you have that balance with your academics and personal life.
Over the
course of my studies in college I plan on being more organized and making sure
that I set a set schedule for myself to follow because throughout my education
life I have always been on a set schedule and I learn best when I have one
because now that I am in college I really don’t have a set schedule and that’s
why I feel that I procrastinate on so many things.
Heres a quick 3min video on creating a schedule for college.
When I searched them term “agency” on Google
the definition that it gave me was a business or organization established to
provide a particular service, typically one that involves organizing
transactions between two other parties.
For instance “Social Work Agency”.
When I searched agency in the Merriam-webster
website the def. they gave me was 1
a: the office or
function of an agent
b: the relationship
between a principal and that person's agent
2
: the capacity, condition, or
state of acting or of exerting power
I can
relate to this term is because after I graduate college with my bachelors
degree in Social Work I plan on working for an agency that deals with what I’m
passionate about.
So much has already happen during my first
four weeks as a college student. During my years as being a high school student
all my teachers have repeatedly told me that the college workload is ridiculous
and now that I’m in college I can see why they kept saying it. I receive triple
amount of homework now then I did in high school. So far I have been getting my
work done and handed on time and feel proud of the work that I do. Being in
college is a whole new ball game then being in high school because in college
you have lots of time on your hands when your not in class to do whatever you
want and you have the choice on doing your work or hanging out with your
friends. Reason I say that is because your professor isn’t going to bother you
and see if you’re doing your work unlike a high school teacher because its all
on you weather or not you pass the class and graduate on time. That’s probably
one of the difficulties that I have with Time Management because it’s something
new to my life that I have rarely practiced.
However I find that I am learning this new
skill quite fast because I have always seem to find the balance between doing
my school work, hanging out with friends, and working part time.
For the next 12 weeks I plan on setting a
schedule for myself because I find that if I’m a set schedule I know that I can
overcome the college stress level just a tad bit. Also with me setting a schedule
for myself it would teach me how time management is easy to set because I will
set a time for everything that I do.
It’s already
the 4th week I college and there is so much things to do. For me as
a commuter I need to find a nice quite setting so I can focus and do my work. Many
people think the library is a good place but for me I feel it’s a distraction
because there’s a lot of movement going on. The place that I go to do my work
and know that it’s going to be quite is the 4th floor fire place
room in the student center. Reason why I find it to more useful for me is
because everybody is always working and mainly being quite which is nice. Even though
it is in the student it tends to be loud but that doesn’t bother me because I always
listen to music so to me it’s a quite place.
When I search the Delayed Gratification on Google the definition
that they gave me was Delayed
gratification, ordeferred gratification, is the ability to resist the
temptation for an immediate reward and wait for a later reward. Generally,
delayed gratification is associated with resisting a smaller but more immediate
reward in order to receive a larger or more enduring reward later. To me
having Delayed Gratification means that in order to get what you want you have
to work for it, you may have to work for a long time to get but once you get
the wait would be worth it like being in college. You’re in college for 4 years
and all you’re doing is earning your degree to be successful in life.
The question that I have come up with for my inquiry question
this week. What if the test subjected was never brought up on having food and
growing up hungry. When they see anything kind of food or sweets their initiative
response would to eat it because they are starving and they are being pressured
and tempted to eat it. However they are being forced to wait 15 minutes not to
eat what’s in front of them and they will receive double the amount as their
reward. But that cause them to have a self-debate because it’s like eat it now
or wait the 15 minutes and receive more. I know that if I was brought up on not
having food and for men to see food in front of me I would grab and eat.
Another question that I had come up from the readings was
that how can I marshmallow predict a person’s future. The reason I came up with
this question is because people change. With people changing so does their
willpower, in the article it talks about how kids don’t have the willpower and
since they can’t wait 15 min. to eat a marshmallow they are destine for failure
in life. I feel that, that’s inaccurate because majority of kids don’t learn
about will till they are in preschool or even kindergarten. So while they learn
about willpower the more they begin to change. This is the reason why I came up
with this question.
When I hear the words delayed gratification I automatically
think about something that takes a longer time. However the real definition is
the ability to wait in order to obtain something you want.In my life there has always been a delayed
gratification like graduating high school and earning my diploma and now that
I’m in college I expect that the next 4 years (hopefully) will be my delayed
gratification. Reason why is because I have patience in order to graduate on
time and earn my degree in my major Social Work. In today’s society people
often think that Americans hate to wait, that we have no patience. I find that
statement to be believable, but its not just only Americans but people in
general because not everybody has patience or love to wait. Think about it, who
loves to wait nobody. Everybody wants what they want when they want it. So it’s
not really fair to stereotype Americans on how they hate waiting and not having
patience.As a society I feel that
majority of the population value instant gratification because again if they
want it they want it they don’t want to wait because some think if they wait
they will loose the passion that they had for it. I feel that we should change
the way people think and provide that tool that we need which is delayed
gratification because nothing comes easy in life. I do feel that technology
plays a role because technology is everywhere and if you want it you get. There
are million things you could do on the Internet and get what you want. Having delayed gratification is a skill that most people
develop around the 3 or 4 but it’s a skill that anybody and any age can live so
there’s no reason why people cant have patience.
After attending the Involvement fair I came to realize that
Southern actually had quite a few things to join like; Spanish club, Step Team,
Dance Team, NAACP Organization, Fraternities and Sororities. After looking at all what they had to offer I decided
to join the NAACP organization. I felt that it would important to me, because through
high school my history teacher would talk about this organization but they
would never go into depth about it. So I hope that when join the club I would
further my knowledge about them as well as becoming a member. I look forward on
attending their first meeting this Monday.
